Engineering Definition of soil
For engineering purposes, soil is defined as "the non-binding composite aggregate of material grains and decayed organic matter when which contains liquid and gas in the empty spaces between the material particles. Soil is used as a construction material in various Civil engineering projects, and it support foundations for various structure. Thus, it is very important that, every civil engineer must the various properties of soil, and its nature. Soil mechanics is the branch of science that deals with the study of the physical properties of soil and the behaviour of soil masses during the application of various types of forces. Soils engineering is the application of the principals of soil mechanics to practical problems. Geotechnical engineering is the sub discipline of civil engineering that deals with natural materials found close to the surface of the earth. It includes the application of the principals of soil mechanics and rock mechanics to design the foundations, retaining structure, and earth structures. In general,soil is formed due to the disintegration and weathering of rock masses and decaying of various organic materials in the earth.
